How to grow sales on Walmart as a supplier
Walmart runs the most automated compliance program in retail: no warnings, just deductions. Here's how selling to Walmart works as a supplier or drop ship vendor, why suppliers lose margin, and everything our team manages on Walmart every day.
To grow sales on Walmart as a supplier: get set up correctly in Supplier One with accurate item data and GTINs; keep every item live and in stock; if you're a Drop Ship Vendor, acknowledge orders inside Walmart's window, ship with the carrier Walmart assigns, and send inventory daily; if you ship to Walmart's distribution centers, hit your OTIF window and label every case to spec; reconcile every remittance for deductions and dispute the wrong ones; and read your scorecard in Retail Link every week. Or hand all of it to a team that does it every day.
If you already sell to Walmart, you know the list
Retail Link. Supplier One — item setup, ship points, PO tracking, payments, all in one place now, with Item 360 and Aspen folded in. GTIN-14 case configurations that have to match what's physically shipped. EDI over AS2 — 850, 856, 810, 846 — mandatory. For DSVs: orders to fulfill Monday through Friday by noon local, Walmart's assigned carrier and FedEx account numbers, daily inventory per warehouse, real-time tracking, operational outages filed two weeks ahead. For stocking suppliers: OTIF measured at the case level, SQEP in three phases, GS1-128 labels on two sides, the Supply Chain Packaging Guide updated every January and July, MABD windows and routing. Then the deductions — OTIF, SQEP, ASN, pricing, allowances — and the dispute queues, some through APDP, some through HighRadius, each with its own clock.
Every one of those is a place to lose margin or lose the item. Our team runs all of them for home furnishing suppliers, inside your Walmart accounts. You keep the accounts and the relationship; we do the work.
How selling to Walmart as a supplier actually works
There are two supplier paths for home furnishing brands. Drop Ship Vendor (DSV): Walmart.com sells your item, sends you the order, and you ship it to the customer with the carrier and service level Walmart assigns. Stocking supplier (1P): Walmart buys your product on purchase orders and you ship cases and pallets into Walmart's distribution centers under OTIF and SQEP. Many home furnishing suppliers start as DSV because it needs no inventory commitment from Walmart. Both paths run through Retail Link for data and scorecards and Supplier One for items, orders and payments, and both require EDI.
Three things decide your sales: whether the item is live and in stock when a shopper searches, whether you ship inside Walmart's rules every time, and whether you catch the deductions before they eat the margin.
Everything we manage for you on Walmart
Getting set up and staying compliant
- Supplier onboarding and agreement paperwork; Retail Link and Supplier One account and user administration; Partner Support cases opened, chased and closed
- EDI onboarding and testing over AS2 — 850 purchase orders, 856 ship notices, 810 invoices, 846 inventory — by managed provider or direct
- Ship points, lead times, calendars and closures maintained in Supplier One; operational outages filed inside Walmart's notice period
- The compliance calendar watched — OTIF, SQEP (PO accuracy and ASN, barcode and labeling, packaging and pallet quality), ASN accuracy — and the Supply Chain Packaging Guide re-read every time Walmart updates it
Item data and content
- Item setup in Supplier One to Walmart's spec: GTINs, GTIN-14 vendor pack configuration that matches what ships, required attributes, dimensions and weights, category mapping
- Titles with the words shoppers search, feature bullets, descriptions; images to Walmart's spec (main on white, angles, lifestyle); product video; rich content where the category supports it
- Sets and variations set up as one product page; inventory tied to components
- New items introduced and discontinued items retired cleanly; cost changes submitted correctly
Orders, shipping and inventory
- DSV: every order acknowledged inside Walmart's window, fulfilled inside the Monday–Friday cutoff, shipped with the assigned carrier and service level, tracking uploaded as soon as the carrier scans; daily inventory feed per warehouse, confirmed accepted
- Stocking supplier: POs acknowledged, cases labeled GS1-128 on two sides, pallets built to the Packaging Guide, appointments and MABD windows managed, ASN (856) sent accurately and on time
- Daily item-status check across the catalog; suppressed and inactive items restored
Getting paid
- Every remittance reconciled in Supplier One — deductions and chargebacks identified by type (OTIF, SQEP, ASN, pricing, allowances) and matched to the PO and invoice
- Disputes filed in the right queue with the right evidence (proof of delivery, bill of lading, ASN records) inside the window — APDP for deductions, HighRadius for OTIF; short and missing payments chased
Returns and claims
- Customer returns and damage claims handled to Walmart's DSV rules; return rate watched by item
Growing sales on Walmart
- Retail Link scorecards and sales data read weekly; Walmart Connect (Walmart's retail media) campaigns coordinated with your ad partner; promotions and events coordinated with your buyer
- Buyer relationships, line reviews and new-item pitches — 20+ years selling home furnishings into the majors
- One login on our platform to see what sold, what's live, and what we fixed
Why suppliers lose money on Walmart
- 1
Deductions go unchallenged. OTIF, SQEP and ASN penalties are automated and quiet. Nobody reconciles the remittance, so they stand.
- 2
The item data doesn't match the box. A GTIN-14 case configuration that differs from what ships is a chargeback every time.
- 3
DSV carrier and cutoff misses. Ship with the wrong carrier or miss the daily cutoff and the account is at risk, not just the order.
- 4
Stale inventory. Walmart.com sells from the last feed it accepted; a missed daily feed means cancellations and metrics.
- 5
Thin listings don't convert. Walmart's search rewards complete content and in-stock items.
- 6
The scorecard isn't read. Retail Link tells you what's coming; most suppliers find out from the deduction.
Proof
- $100M+ in online sales managed and helped produce across Walmart, Home Depot, Wayfair and the other majors — 20+ years
- 25+ home furnishing brands
- Williams Imports: about $10,000 a month → over $4 million a year within two years, best month $586,000

Frequently asked questions
How do I become a Walmart supplier?
Through Walmart's supplier application, category fit and a buyer relationship. Once approved you're set up in Retail Link and Supplier One, complete EDI onboarding, and go live either as a Drop Ship Vendor for Walmart.com or as a stocking supplier shipping to Walmart's distribution centers.
What is a Walmart Drop Ship Vendor?
A supplier that ships Walmart.com orders directly to the customer. Walmart sends the order, assigns the carrier and service level, and expects a daily inventory feed and real-time tracking. It's the lowest-friction way for a home furnishing supplier to sell on Walmart.com.
What are OTIF and SQEP?
OTIF (On-Time, In-Full) measures whether your cases arrive at Walmart's distribution centers inside the window and in the quantity ordered. SQEP (Supplier Quality Excellence Program) covers PO and ASN accuracy, barcode and labeling, and packaging and pallet quality. Both are automated deduction programs.
What is Supplier One?
Walmart's consolidated supplier portal — item setup (formerly Item 360), ship points (formerly Aspen), purchase orders, payments, deductions and disputes in one place. Retail Link remains the data and scorecard system alongside it.
Can I dispute a Walmart deduction?
Yes, inside the window and with the right evidence — proof of delivery, bill of lading and ASN records. Different deduction types go through different queues. We file and track them.
Can Grow ECommerce run Walmart for us if we already sell there?
Yes. We audit what's live and the last year of remittances, fix and complete the listings, take over the daily DSV and compliance work, and dispute what's been wrongly deducted.
